Print, Cut, Repeat

28.05 - 19.09.2026

The work of Pauline d’Andigné, developed in collaboration with Gate 44, explores the genesis of the image through zones of friction and displacement. With Print Cut Repeat, the artist introduces an experimental protocol where the pictorial gesture directly confronts the constraints of matter. It all begins with the trial of the substrate: wood stained with ink, then partially charred with a blowtorch. This base is no longer neutral; its thermal scars and absorption zones dictate an initial latent image. In dialogue with this raw material, unique monotypes are produced on paper. On these singular prints, d’Andigné intervenes through cuts and hollows, inscribing the negative space of the "polka dot” : a graphic and domestic motif that serves as the recurring thread throughout her visual vocabulary.

The final image emerges from the marouflage process: the paper is layered onto the wood, yet deliberately offset. This slight misalignment reveals the gaps between the printed image and its support. By destabilizing the conventional hierarchies between foreground and background, surface and structure, Pauline d’Andigné proposes an unstable image: a system of material relations where the familiar motif and the scorched structure never quite coincide. The work thus unfolds as a provisional state, defined by its own internal resistances.
