Deborah Bowmann is an artist duo with Amaury Daurel (1990, Bordeaux) and Victor Delestre (1989, Bordeaux) which activities comprises curating exhibitions and producing sculptures, installations and set design.
Deborah Bowmann aims to develop alternative manners of thinking exhibition making in the fields of contemporary art and design.
"In December 2014, we inaugurated our exhibition space in Amsterdam. After one year of exhibitions there, we relocated to Brussels in September 2015. Deborah Bowmann thus articulates a close relationship between studio practice and curatorial practice, merging artistic production, exhibition-making, and scenography in the spirit of Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art.
This practice unfolds through various systems of collaboration, originating from the exhibitions we organize in our space. Our production, drawing inspiration from détournements of domestic environments, bureaucratic universes, and commercial language, operates within a service-oriented logic, fluctuating between sculpture, design, and scenography. Within these exhibitions, the distinction between authors often becomes blurred, as the exhibition itself takes precedence as the work.
This approach extends beyond our exhibition space.
In 2017, we took part in the Prix Ricard in Paris, curated by Anne-Claire Schmitz; in 2018, we held a solo exhibition at Centre d’art Les Capucins in Embrun; in 2020, a solo exhibition at Centre d’art Passages; and in 2021, 2022, and 2023, we were invited by the Centre Pompidou, Paris, to design the scenography for the Extra! festival for three consecutive years.
In August 2022, after 32 exhibitions and eight years of activity in this format, we decided to permanently close our space in order to rethink our way of working and regain greater freedom. Enriched by the experience of this place, built on encounters and numerous collaborations, we also wish to reaffirm that Deborah Bowmann is a mobile project, a living and collaborative sculpture, a constantly evolving artistic creation rather than a static one. We are currently working on a publication with Triangle Books, scheduled for early 2024, retracing the entirety of the exhibitions organized in our space." - Deborah Bowmann
